Paris Saint-Germain Defeats Olympique de Marseille on Penalties to Secure French Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

PSG players celebrating

PSG has now secured the season-opening trophy on fourteen separate times.

The Parisian giants needed a dramatic equaliser followed by a perfect penalty shootout to overcome Marseille in the Gulf and capture a fourth straight French Super Cup title.

The European champions seemed to be coasting towards a comfortable win in the showdown between the French league champions and the Coupe de France holders after the French winger opened the scoring in the opening stages.

However, the southern French side fired twice in the closing moments to seize a surprise advantage. First, the English forward converted from the spot-kick, before the defender unfortunately directed the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a breathtaking twist of fortune, the Portuguese striker grabbed a vital equaliser in the final seconds to send the contest into a deciding shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Chevalier then emerged as the hero, saving crucial attempts from O'Riley and Traore.

From the spot, Ramos, Vitinha, the full-back, and Desire Doue all converted with composure for PSG to seal a 4-1 shootout win.

Now 14-time winners PSG, who met last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Marseille after completing a domestic double, have now won this competition for the twelfth time in the last thirteen seasons.
